Getting Ready for Your Calibration
With your upcoming Caliber appointment, your collision repair or windshield replacement may need ADAS Calibration. But don’t worry, as the experts, we wanted to give you a detailed look at what calibration is, why you may need it and what to expect from your appointment.
What is calibration?
You might be surprised by the technology and safety systems involved with your vehicle. The calibration our expert technicians perform during your repair is to ensure that the sensors continue working properly after the replacement.
In many vehicles, recalibrating a vehicle involves interacting with Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). ADAS features cover a wide range of parts and functions, but their basic purpose is to help you stay safe on the road. Some common ADAS features include:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic emergency braking
- Collision warning systems
- Parking assist systems
- Rearview cameras
- Lane departure warning systems
- Intelligent speed adaptation
These advanced systems rely on an intricate network or dynamic sensors and cameras mounted on and around your car to analyze your surroundings to provide feedback like audio or visual warnings of potential risks. Some ADAS features may even slow, stop or steer the vehicle to protect the driver and others.
Why do we calibrate?
To repair your vehicle or replace your windshield, our expert technicians must first remove or disconnect any ADAS-related parts from the damaged parts. After replacement, those parts must then be reconnected and calibrated to exact manufacturer specifications. The ADAS sensors and cameras are sensitive and must be perfectly aligned to ensure your ADAS system is working properly to keep you safe behind the wheel.
What happens during my calibration appointment?
After the vehicle is repaired our expert technicians will follow manufacturer’s procedures to calibrate your vehicle’s ADAS. Here’s a breakdown of what they will do to ensure your calibration is performed correctly.
- First, the technician will use up-to-date, specialized equipment to work with your vehicle’s computer. This involves restoring factory specifications and testing to make sure the calibration was successful.
- Depending on the vehicle, the technician may need to perform a dynamic calibration, which requires the vehicle to be driven to certain original manufacturer parameters to calibrate the camera. Drive times may vary based on roadway conditions, weather and the vehicle’s make and model.
- When your calibration is complete, you can get back behind the wheel with confidence knowing that all our repairs and auto glass replacements are backed by our written limited lifetime warranty.
How do I prepare for my calibration appointment?
Please follow the pre-requisites below that are recommended by most vehicle manufacturers to ensure your vehicle is ready for your appointment.
- Alert your technician if your vehicle’s suspension ride height or factory wheels/tires have been modified in any way.
- Remove bulky items and added weight from the backseat or trunk.
- Please ensure your vehicle’s fuel tank is full.
